about

Two masters of their craft are recorded here in this impromptu encounter. Abdoul had traveled to Mali for a brief trip from the United States and Madu Faraba decided to visit with his old friend and student. The joy of meeting and playing together again after so long is palpable in this recording.

The late Mamadou Sylla was a well known musician in Bamako, Mali. Mamadou was from the village of Faraba in the Wasulu region of southern Mali. In 1961 he joined the National Ballet of Mali and began traveling the world showcasing his talents. He also performed at festivals and ceremonies in Mali and helped popularize the rhythm known as Farabanka. He was known locally as Madu Faraba.

Abdoul Doumbia was raised in the village of Foutaka Zambougou near the ancient Bamana capitol of Segou, Mali. At the age of five he moved to Bamako and began a sixteen year apprenticeship with his primary teacher, Moriba Keita. Abdoul was chosen to represent his region for eight consecutive years in the National Drum Festival of Mali. In 1991 he accepted a faculty position in the African Music and Dance Department at Brown University.
